Rafferty & Cartmill Coat of Arms

“Rafferty & Cartmill Coat of Arms”
Pen and Ink on Illustration Board
16″ x 20″ (matted)

Another in my first series of custom Coat of Arms drawings, this is the first combination of two separate family names into one composition. Upon my trip to Ireland, I stayed at my host’s sister and brother-in-law’s place. This drawing was my gift to them for the constant hospitality the showed all of us for the entire time we were there. The elements of the Cartmill coat of arms and here merged with the elements found in the Rafferty coat of arms. A red heraldic beast on a green and yellow background meeting with the blackbird, fish and clubs of the aforementioned coat of arms. For this drawing, rather than making the clubs objects that dance around the piece, I placed them in a descending forced perspective. The top portions of each representing the 9 phases of the moon. For many late nights singing and storytelling happened at this home and this was my way of illustrating those experiences.
